My home is at Kuala Lumpur’s lower end. Buddhist families in front, Hindus and Muslims to the left and right. The gate is unlocked and so is the car. The kids, Muslim children in particular, would run into my place and into other open homes like one happy family. They still do. The caveat is don’t touch the Macs. Society has changed in the past 50 years but not dramatically, as seen in Malacca, Malaysia’s test-bed of tolerance and peace. These ‘Malaccan’ children will lead Malaysia in the future and it is hoped no-one hijacks this momentum.
